This work uses Chinese characters as key elements, ensuring the ones for “books”, “reading”, “culture” and “history” are integral to the piece. The magnified individual “cast characters” are presented in the form of moveable printing types. As Chungli City has 19 military dependent villages and new construction work at the library is close to “Matzu New Village”, the work aims to highlight its textual context by using excerpts from “dependent villages’ literature”; viewers therefore, through this writing, can experience first-hand the culture and atmosphere of a highly distinctive community. In a close connection between construction and lettering work, we collaborated with the architect to embed those characters from dependent villages’ literature onto the stone slab at the main entrance.
